Davidson Historical Society takes a look back at school teacher and community leader Ada Jenkins with its next program on Saturday, Nov. 7, 2026, in partnership with the Ada Jenkins Center in Davidson.

"Ada Jenkins & Her Legacy" begins at 4pm at the Ada Jenkins Center community hall, 212 Gamble St., Davidson.

Ada Jenkins was an important leader in Davidson and its African American Community. Among other things, she helped raise funds to build a new Black school in Davidson's West Side neighborhood. It opened on the current site in 1937 and was renamed for Jenkins after her death. The school operated until the end of segregation in 1966.  It's now the Ada Jenkins Center, a community services center serving residents in need.

We'll hear from DHS board member Margaret Kuras about Jenkins herself as well as from community members sharing their memories of attending the school. And Ada Jenkins Center CEO Harold Rice will talk about the role of the center today.

Did you attend Ada Jenkins School or do you know someone who did? Please join us and share your memories.
