Davidson Historical Society will present a panel discussion and tour on "Race & Slavery at Davidson College" on Sunday, October 26, at 4pm at Davidson College Visual Arts Center, 315 N. Main St., Davidson.

It's the second program of the season for the society, which has re-launched this fall after a five-year hiatus that began during the coronavirus pandemic.

Historian Hilary Green, the James B. Duke Professor of Africana Studies at Davidson College,  and Martha Gimson, the college's historic sites and program manager, will discuss the research and commemoration efforts that began in 2020. Historical society President David Boraks will moderate.

After the discussion, Green and Gimson will lead a private tour of the college's newly opened Oak Row Museum and the public art memorial "With These Hands," by sculptor Hank Willis Thomas.

"We're excited to host this program, which will help anyone interested in Davidson history gain insight into how Davidson College is looking back at an important part of its past," said Boraks.

The program will be in Semans Auditorium at the Visual Arts Center, with the panel discussion followed by the tour. It's free. Register at DavidsonHistoricalSociety.org, where you also can become a member of the society. Memberships begin at $25 a year.

Davidson Historical Society promotes an understanding and appreciation of the history of Davidson, North Carolina and its surrounding area. The society is a 501(c)(3) non-profit organization supported by memberships and donations.
